#2 - Tata Duende

Undeniably, the most feared legend of Belize is TATA DUENDE! Known for his odd appearance of a stalky, dwarf man with backward feet, and no thumbs; Also his big red hat, and white beard by those who have said to seen him. Although he looks scary, Tata Duende is a spirit whose purpose is to protect the forest. Still, make no mistake that you do not want to meet him. It is said that he chops off and collects the thumbs and other limbs of those who encounter him!

ORIGIN

The name Tata Duende is of Maya origin which translates to "Grandfather Goblin". Tata meaning grandfather or old and Duende meaning Goblin. The nature of how his legs came to be twisted can vary but he is consistently associated with being a guardian of the jungle. It is said that if you hear whistling or a guitar in the jungle that Tata Duende is near.  Other versions of Tata Duende describe him as a helper to those lost, a trickster, and even a teacher of his music. Here he is pictured with a more "friendly" look as he appears in the card game Pile Up Belize.

His powers change with each version. Some giving him shapeshifter abilities, and others control over the environment. He is most notable for his strength. It is said he can over power ten men despite his size and legs.  

PURPOSE

Tata Duende Stories serve as warnings to children and adults to stay out the jungle and also against those who harm the environment such as poachers or loggers.
